The father pleaded: “Please take my brain instead of my daughter’s”

DAKLAK – After the doctor’s announcement that the health of 13-year-old Pham Tran Nha Uyen, who was injured in a traffic accident, has become more severe, advising the family to bring her home so that everyone could see her for the last time. However, with love and strong belief, the father decided not to give up any opportunity, no matter how small, just to try to save his child’s life.

Just like many others, Mr. Pham Vu Truong Giang and Mrs. Tran Thi Kim Thanh’s family lead a simple life with two young children, a boy, and a girl. He works as an office clerk while she runs an online cake business from home, mainly taking orders by online. Their combined income is just enough to cover rent, utilities, and their children’s education expenses. Despite their modest financial situation, the family never lacks laughter and love, as everyone cares for and supports each other. After work, Mr. Giang often helps his wife with cooking, delivering orders, and teaching their children. Whenever he has free time, he takes the family out for a stroll and dinner. To Mrs. Thanh, Mr. Giang is a good husband and an exemplary father who devotes himself to his family.

Thanks to nurturing with love and teaching about sharing with others from a young age, the children have developed a sense of not demanding their parents to buy them favorite toys, gifts, or beautiful clothes. Especially Pham Tran Nha Uyen – the eldest daughter- is very understanding and obedient, and people around her praise her as a “filial girl” because she knows how to help her parents sell goods, clean the house, and take care of her sibling from a young age. Moreover, for many years, she has been an outstanding student at the Ethnic Boarding High School in the Central Highlands.

Despite living in an environment without adequate material possessions, she enjoys helping people, especially elderly people, and young children. She once told her parents, “My biggest dream is to become a teacher in the future to be able to help orphaned children who cannot afford to go to school.”

Perhaps that dream ended for the 13-year-old girl when the tragedy struck…

The accident has stolen childhood

That day was September 7th, 2022. Like any other afternoon, she helped her mother wash dishes, hang clothes to dry, and prepared her homework for the afternoon class. Then, she waited until it was time to wake up her younger brother so that we could go to school together on our electric bike. It was also the last time she spoke to her parents when she said, “Goodbye Mom and Dad, I’m going to school.”

Because there were only 3 minutes left until we reached the school gate, suddenly a teenager (a student of class 11A11 of Chu Van An School) rode a 100cc motorbike with license plate 47L1-086.62 and rushed towards them at the intersection of Phan Boi Chau and Doan Doan Dich in Buon Ma Thuot city.

The strong impact caused the electric bicycle to break in half, throwing the two sisters in opposite directions and causing them to faint on the spot. A few minutes later, the younger brother regained consciousness and saw his older sister lying in a pool of blood with her ears and mouth bleeding continuously. Nearby, many frightened people were calling for a taxi, but no one dared to take them as it was a crime scene and they were afraid of getting involved. Fortunately, there was Mr. Tran Quoc Tung – a kind passerby who happened to see the incident and immediately took the two children to Thien Hanh Hospital for emergency treatment.

Upon hearing the news, his couple rushed to the hospital, and upon arrival, they saw their daughter lying motionless. There were six doctors gathered around her, providing emergency treatment as her heart rate on the breathing machine’s monitor was almost flatlining.

They don’t understand what’s happening about three minutes later, a doctor arrived and announced, “Your child’s condition is very critical due to a severe brain injury. Her pupils are dilated and showing signs of imminent death, so we need to operate on her immediately. However, even if the surgery is successful, she may end up in a vegetative state. Therefore, the family needs to make a quick decision and sign a consent form for the operation to proceed.”

It breaks their hearts to see their beloved daughter, whom we have cherished and nurtured, fall into this unfortunate situation. He sat there in silence, tears streaming down his face, while she, despite her lack of composure, rallied with him to decide to save their child, even though her child was only holding on to 3% of the life.

Twice winning back the life of their child

That evening, the pouring rain along with the coldness of the Central Highlands made the room even gloomier and more depressing than ever. The feeling of anxiety, nervousness, and chaotic thoughts in front of the ICU waiting room made the time stretch on, adding to the heavy burden on the couple’s shoulders.

At the final minute, the surgical result was also successful, and both of them were overjoyed, mixed with tears of emotion.

It was thought that the ‘death’s door’ had passed, but after 13 days of surgery, the situation worsened. Due to the extensive brain injury and multiple postoperative complications, the doctors had to transfer the child to the emergency department at Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, arriving at 9:30 pm. Because this is the frontline of the hospital, almost all patients from around the country were transferred there, with mainly severe and overloaded cases, resulting in a shortage of medical equipment. Therefore, the father was tasked with squeezing the manual resuscitation bag by hand for his child for 2 hours. During that time, he witnessed other patients passing away, making him extremely anxious. Only when the child was transferred to the Neuro-ICU did he feel somewhat relieved.

Most of the critically ill patients are in this area, directly taken care of by doctors and allow their relatives to visit for about 5 minutes a day. Although it’s only a short moment, every day they have to wait from early morning until the afternoon to make sure they don’t miss the chance to see their child. However, on the tenth day, the doctors at BVCR hospital once again delivered the news: The child’s brain cannot be saved anymore, the family should arrange to take the child home so that everyone can see the child for the last time.”

It seemed like he couldn’t bear it anymore, he cried like a child with earnest words: “Please take my brain instead of my daughter’s. I beg the doctors to help my daughter, I only need my daughter to live”, which made many people who witnessed the scene touched.

Then, the miracle happened once again after the medical teams decided to transfer the child to the Intensive Care Unit, where Doctor Hoa took care of her attentively, encouraged, guided the treatment, and discovered severe pneumonia and sepsis after surgical complications

Wishing for our child’s safety and well-being

For 4 long months, they rushed around different hospitals from Thien Hanh Hospital for brain surgery to Cho Ray Hospital for treatment of the brain, severe pneumonia, sepsis, and nerve repair after a surgical complication. Then, they went back to the Central Highlands General Hospital for brain treatment and physical therapy at the Traditional Medicine Hospital and underwent respiratory treatment at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Buon Ma Thuot.

In the journey of accompanying the daughter, he is never absent. A father with a noble heart, willing to exchange his life for his child. Therefore, he stopped all activities to wholeheartedly take care of his child’s activities such as oral hygiene, hygiene, changing diapers, massaging hands and feet, and telling daily stories even though the child no longer recognizes anyone, all limbs have been completely paralyzed, unable to speak, even unable to swallow and chew food. There are days when the child is constipated or has diarrhea, and he and his wife patiently help the daughter. “Almost every day, my husband and I cry when we look at our child. Especially every time he delivers goods or makes cakes alone, I shed tears when I remember his smile and the words echoing in my ears, ‘Mom, let me help you’. From a good-natured and affectionate child, unfortunately, he suffered a traffic accident and now has to lie in one place, waiting for his parents to feed and clean him”,  said Kim Thanh while wiping her tears.

Despite knowing that the monthly financial burden ahead will face many difficulties due to this illness, which requires a lot of time, effort, and money. But by strong love and faith, even if there is only a 1% chance of survival, the role of being parents will never give up to regain peace for their child.
