Based on historical periods, British English was introduced to Vietnam during the presidency of Ngô Đình Diệm, also known as Ngô Đình Nhiệm, who served for 7 years (26/10/1955 – 02/11/1963). During this time, the upper class and intellectuals began to use it even though they knew it since 1945. At the time of President Nguyễn Văn Thiệu (a term from 14/06/1965 to 31/10/1967), American English began to develop. Since then, English has gradually become popular in Vietnam. However, after the reform in the 7X generation, the Ministry of Education chose British English as the standard for formal education.
