Every person carries a distinct and meaningful mission in life. Whether you are thriving or facing obstacles, content or lonely, you are an essential part of the universe’s fabric. Consequently, only you can internalize and extract the precious lessons learned from your journey. Have you ever contemplated or planned to write a book to share your experiences and explorations with others?

Maybe, your knowledge may contribute to helping someone who is struggling or lost, meaning that you are fulfilling a part of your mission. Let’s explore the significance and value that books bring to the community and society together.

The Emergence of Printed Books

Books have been closely associated with the development of written language, beginning with inscriptions on stone, tree bark, leaves, animal bones, and clay tablets, and then progressing to rolled papyrus. This material served as a bridge between ancient Egypt and the modern world, as the first ancient Egyptian book dates back to the 25th century BCE.

During the 9th century CE in ancient Chinese civilization, books were handwritten and then copied onto wooden blocks, clay, and copper plates using manual techniques. However, by the 15th century, movable type printing had become popular in Europe, as evidenced by a document from 1440, marking a significant period of advancement in printing technology.

The Message of Books

Originally, books were seen as a device, a tool for storing information. Through many stages of historical development up until now, books have come to hold a meaning closer to our lives, to share knowledge and useful experience to help people strive towards goodness.

Therefore, books are valuable treasures, containing the author’s passion, aiming to convey messages about life through diverse topics such as science, business, beauty, happiness, emotions, and more, to stimulate motivation, increase understanding, awaken, and liberate negative internal energy.

Benefits of Reading Books

Recent statistics show that Israelis read an average of 60 books per year, whereas the Japanese read 20, Malaysians read 12, Singaporeans read 14, and the Chinese read about 5. Additionally, it is estimated that 80% of successful and wealthy people in the US have a daily reading habit, including prominent figures such as Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg. Billionaire Warren Buffett has also shared that he used to read 600 to 1,000 pages every day. For him, this will contribute significantly to the expansion of his own knowledge. He once said “Read 500 pages every day. That’s how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will do it”.

In Vietnam, there are currently numerous entrepreneurs and billionaires advocating for the habit of reading, driven by their own passion for books since childhood. Most of them opt for a modest and altruistic lifestyle, actively contributing to the community and society. Take Mr. Pham Nhat Vuong, the founder and Chairman of Vingroup, for example. Not only is he a successful entrepreneur, but he is also a philanthropist and patron of the arts. He established the Vingroup Foundation to sponsor various education and art projects, including the construction of free libraries and advanced schools. His goal is to build a knowledge ecosystem in Vietnam by investing in research and technological development.

Alternatively, Mr. Dang Le Nguyen Vu, Chairman of Trung Nguyen Group, is one of the passionate advocates for reading. He has initiated numerous activities that positively impact the reading culture in Vietnam. Mr. Vu established the Trung Nguyen Library, a large public library in Buon Ma Thuot city, where people can access hundreds of thousands of books for free. Additionally, he actively collaborates in various reading promotion programs and sponsors cultural and artistic activities. Furthermore, according to practical surveys, regular reading not only fosters positive thinking and understanding but also enhances communication skills and language fluency. Importantly, consistent reading helps prevent memory decline syndrome, promoting mental agility and clarity. This is one of the reasons why the Jewish people consistently achieve the world’s highest IQ scores.

Call for Action

Based on the evidence presented, we can appreciate the significant impact that books have on real-life situations and their contribution to building a cultured and knowledgeable society. It is crucial to recognize the importance and social value of nurturing and enhancing people’s knowledge.

The government often initiates campaigns to promote and encourage publishing and reading activities. In particular, Vietnam Book Day is celebrated annually on February 24th.
